What is oral surgery?

Problems with your teeth can become painful and even cause jaw damage, especially if left untreated. When this happens, you may need dental surgery. Oral surgery, also referred to as dental surgery or maxillofacial surgery, is a broad term used to describe surgeries involving your teeth, face, and jaw. An oral surgeon specializes in treating jaw and facial issues and can restore the function and appearance of your oral cavity. If you have missing teeth, have experienced facial trauma or infection, or if you have jaw issues, you may need dental surgery.

Our oral surgery procedures

We perform the following dental procedures:

Tooth extraction for impacted teeth: Tooth impaction refers to when a tooth doesn’t come in (erupt) properly. This most often happens with wisdom teeth (third molars), although it can happen with bicuspids and other teeth as well. An impacted tooth can put pressure on and  damage other teeth, cause pain, and damage your jaw. Removing the impacted tooth (tooth extraction) is the best treatment option.

Surgery for jaw-joint issues: the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects the jaw to the skull and works like a small hinge. Problems with this joint can cause pain, popping or clicking, and headaches. Usually, TMJ disorders can be treated without surgery. However, in severe cases, surgery is one of the best ways to correct TMJ disorders. The specialists at Kriebel dental can help you navigate your options and get the treatment you need.

Bone augmentation (bone graft):  if a tooth has been missing for a long time, your jaw bone may present bone resorption, meaning it may be too thin and short to support dental implants and other restorations. To correct this, we place a special bone graft material in the weak part of the jaw, which then heals in place and strengthens your jaw, creating the correct platform for predictable dental implant placement

Treatment for occlusal trauma: an occlusal trauma or pathology happens when there is abnormal wear and tear on your teeth due to a misaligned bite (an overbite or underbite). Left untreated, a misaligned bite can cause pain and damage your teeth and jaw. We can correct this with oral surgery and restore any remaining tooth or jaw damage. Dental Implants: Having one or more missing teeth may impact your ability to talk, chew, and feel confident. Dental implant surgery can help. Dental implants are small, titanium posts that are implanted into the jaw in place of a missing tooth. Once in place, a crown or bridge can be attached to give a natural look and feel. Dental implants are excellent alternatives for restoring one tooth or a full arch restoration providing comfort, enhancing chewing ability and esthetics.

How much does oral surgery cost?

The cost of oral surgery varies widely, depending on the procedure and the severity of the case. For instance, in the United States, surgical tooth extraction for an adult ranges from $500-1000$. A bone grafting procedure starts at around $1000. Dental implants and bone grafts together can cost upwards of $4000 to $5000. And if you need more than one procedure, things quickly add up to thousands of dollars. This hefty price tag can be a barrier to getting the care you need.
