What are dental implants?

Dental implants are small titanium posts that are surgically placed into the jawbone where they are integrated with living bone. Once osseointegrated (anchored by a growth of bone around it), the implant serves as an anchor to support a porcelain crown or bridge.

This is a good alternative in cases where a natural tooth is non-restorable and don’t allow for building bridges or tooth replacements on their own. During the procedure, the roots of a tooth are replaced with titanium posts that become the anchors for artificial teeth. This process requires around 3 to 4 months from start to finish.

Why get dental implants?

For many dental patients, dental implants are the best way to provide adequate support and stability for anchoring restorations like crowns and bridges. Dental implants also help improve a patient’s chewing function, which is of great importance, not only for the intake of food but also for the systemic, mental and physical functions of the body. They also prevent further bone loss, enhance aesthetics, and improve the patient’s self-confidence.

Dental implants offer several benefits over other replacement methods, including:
  • No need for a removable denture
  • Permanent solution
  • Can be used to replace multiple teeth at once
  • Implant supported crowns last much longer than traditional crown
Replacing missing or damaged teeth can be a giant step towards improving your smile and self-confidence. But dental implants aren’t only for aesthetic reasons. The consequences of doing nothing about a lost or broken tooth can grow into a much larger problem as time goes on. Some of the consequences of not restoring your missing teeth are: bone loss, tooth mobility, tooth migration, overloading of existing natural teeth and lack of chewing capacity.
Are dental implants affordable?

Yes. In the United States, a dental implant with abutment and standard crown can cost $3,900 and a full arched fixed denture can be upwards of $25,000 to $40,000. At Kriebel Dental clinic in Costa Rica, our U.S.-educated trained and U.S.-certified dentists offer American patients the highest quality dental implant procedures that are vastly more affordable than they are in the United States. In general, treatment costs in Costa Rica are very affordable and can be up to 70% less expensive than the same procedures in the U.S. We guarantee our American patients top of the line implant brands and bone grafting materials. We don’t compromise on quality.

Is Costa Rica safe?

Undoubtedly. Dental care in Costa Rica is absolutely safe! Costa Rica’s progressive democratic government and environment of peace and tranquility make the country a very popular dental tourism destination for American patients from the United States, Canada and Europe. Culturally, the country reflects a universal genuine goodwill combined with a cultural distaste for conflict.

Experiencing a dental tourism vacation in Costa Rica is as convenient as it is rejuvenating. The flight time from the United States is between 4 and 7 hours, depending on your city of origin, and most major US cities have daily non-stop flights to CR.

The Kriebel Dental Implant Experience

At Kriebel Dental in Costa Rica, we offer most types of dental implant and full mouth restoration procedures, including all-on-four implants, all-on-six implants, all-on-eight implants, and single implant restorations.

But here, no two dental patients are the same. We take great pains to map out the course of action that is right for you. The actual process will include two trips to our modern San Jose facilities over the course of three to six months, but we will be in constant contact with you every step of the way to explain your treatment plan, prepare you for treatment, and answer your questions.

Here’s how your procedure will map out, from start to finish:

Step 1: Phone consultation

If you are interested in learning more about getting affordable dental implants at Kriebel Dental in Costa Rica, please schedule a call with Dr. Kriebel.

During this initial contact, we will be requesting some information regarding your current dental condition. This will include any diagnostic images, radiographs, intraoral photos (selfies) and any additional dental records available.

Dr. Kriebel will then take all of the information you’ve provided and develop the correct treatment plan for your dental implants needs, this plan is customized for you and you alone. There are no set procedures or recipes here.

Each of our dental patients presents a unique clinical scenario, so each patient receives an individual treatment plan to best serve his or her dental implant needs. Our treatment plan will consider several factors, including:

  • Medical condition
  • Periodontal condition
  • Bone loss or bone defects
  • Radiographic diagnosis
  • Bone architecture
  • Cavity assessment
  • Evaluation of current dental restorations
  • Dental hygiene
  • Teeth grinding habits, bruxism
  • Esthetic patient expectations
  • Age and reliance on caretakers to maintain dental implants for the long term

This initial diagnostic phase will help us determine the correct dental implant treatment. This includes: number of implants needed, bone grafting requirements, material selection and overall prosthetic design.

Step 2: Implant surgery with temporaries

This will be your first dental vacation visit in beautiful Costa Rica! Plan to stay for 10 days to two weeks because we want to make sure you recover completely before returning home. The length of stay also depends on the patient’s dental needs. For single implant surgeries or small cases, only a week is required.

Day 1: Your first visit to our state of the art office will take about one hour and at that time we will do a CT scan, an intraoral diagnostic examination, a medical history assessment, diagnostic impressions and go over your upcoming procedures. Although we are available for you at any time throughout the process, this is a great opportunity for us to address any last-minute questions or concerns you might have.

Day 2: While we are busy at the office fabricating your custom temporaries, surgical guides and getting all the details ready for your surgery you are free to enjoy all the peace and tranquility that Costa Rica has to offer.

Day 3: Dental implant surgery appointment The length of the surgical procedure will depend on the diagnostic findings, prosthetic design and patient’s needs. Surgery length for full arch implant cases may take between 2-3hours (All on 4 or All on 6) and single implant placement procedures will take around 35 minutes.

You may choose to be under sedation or regular anesthesia, for which we will have a licensed anesthesiologist present.

After a brief recovery in our offices, we will make sure you are returned safely to your hotel with all the medications and instructions you’ll need for the rest of your stay in San Jose.

Days 4-10: While we monitor you closely to make sure your antibiotics are working properly, no pain is present, all questions addressed, and post op checks scheduled you can take your dream Costa Rican vacation. When you are ready, you’ll return to the United States, dental implant maintenance and cleaning instructions in hand.

The healing phase will be determined on an individual basis. Regular surgical procedures require 3-4 months of healing. If major bone grafting procedures are performed, the length of the healing phase will be 5-6 months. This will be determined clinically by Dr. Kriebel.

We will monitor your progress during the healing phase and ask that you send weekly selfies so that we can make sure everything is going well. We are always available for any questions or patient concerns.

Phase 3 Dental implant restorative phase

The length of stay will depend on the extent of the restorative plan. In simple cases, the patient is required to stay in Costa Rica for 5-6 business days. When restoring full arch implant restorations (All on 4, All on 6, All on 8) we require the patient to stay for 10 business days. This includes post-op appointments, hygiene instructions and maintenance recommendations.

Phase 4: Enjoy your beautiful smile!

After getting your dental implant procedure by the U.S.-educated, U.S.-trained, and U.S.-certified dentists at Kriebel Dental in San Jose, Costa Rica, you will be amazed at how transformed your smile will be. Your self-confidence is almost guaranteed to hit an all-time high when you see how your friends and family, not to mention co-workers, respond to the new you!
